Scabies

Definition:
Scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by Sarcoptes scabiei mites that burrow into the skin, causing intense itching and rash.
Causes:
- Direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person.
- Sharing personal items like clothing, bedding, or towels.
Symptoms:
- Intense itching, especially at night.
- Rash with small red bumps or burrows (thin, thread-like lines).
- Common sites: Between fingers, wrists, elbows, armpits, waistline, and genitals.
Diagnosis:
- Clinical examination of the rash.
- Skin scraping to identify mites, eggs, or fecal matter under a microscope.
Treatment:
- Prescription creams or lotions (e.g., permethrin or ivermectin).
- Oral ivermectin in severe cases.
- Washing bedding and clothing in hot water to eliminate mites.
Prevention:
- Avoid direct contact with infected individuals.
- Maintain hygiene and avoid sharing personal items.
- Treat close contacts even if asymptomatic to prevent reinfestation.
Complications:
- Secondary bacterial infections (e.g., impetigo).
- Crusted scabies (severe form in immunocompromised individuals).
Always consult a healthcare provider for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
