Scabies

Definition:
Scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by Sarcoptes scabiei mites that burrow into the skin, causing intense itching and rash.

Causes:

  • Direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person.
  • Sharing personal items like clothing, bedding, or towels.

Symptoms:

  • Intense itching, especially at night.
  • Rash with small red bumps or burrows (thin, thread-like lines).
  • Common sites: Between fingers, wrists, elbows, armpits, waistline, and genitals.

Diagnosis:

  • Clinical examination of the rash.
  • Skin scraping to identify mites, eggs, or fecal matter under a microscope.

Treatment:

  • Prescription creams or lotions (e.g., permethrin or ivermectin).
  • Oral ivermectin in severe cases.
  • Washing bedding and clothing in hot water to eliminate mites.

Prevention:

  • Avoid direct contact with infected individuals.
  • Maintain hygiene and avoid sharing personal items.
  • Treat close contacts even if asymptomatic to prevent reinfestation.

Complications:

  • Secondary bacterial infections (e.g., impetigo).
  • Crusted scabies (severe form in immunocompromised individuals).

Always consult a healthcare provider for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
